Women’s Golf Western District ‘Bronze’ Event

Due to wet conditions at Cobden Golf Course the WGWD bronze 2 & 3 event was transferred to Port Fairy Golf Links on Friday 24 July. A total of thirty three players from six local clubs contested the two divisions. In the Bronze 2 Division (29 – 36 handicap), Elaine Hrabar, from Terang with 37 points playing off a handicap of 32 defeated three other competitors on count back; whilst in the Bronze 3 Division (37 – 45 handicap), Margie Driscoll also from Terang was a clear winner with 40 points.

‘Donohue Day’

This popular Social Club event was held on Sunday 26 June with club stalwarts Helen and Roger Wake placing their names on the coveted shield for the first time as a team. Helen had previously won the event in 1990 whilst Roger recorded a win in 2001.

Club and Riddell Cups

Members are reminded that this Saturdays CCMM doubles as the qualifying rounds for both the ‘Club’ and ‘Riddell’ cups. Please refer to the program book for playing conditions for both these events.

Women golfers again support a good cause.

After their successful ‘charity day’ held in May our women golfers again dipped into their pockets last week to support a worthy cause. This time it was ‘Peters Project’ who will benefit from our annual ‘Anti Cancer’ event conducted on Thursday 16 June. With long time member, Lesley Hamilton, donating the events trophies and the club contributing the entry fees a sum of $400 was raised.  

New golfers continue their development.

New golfers Tuesday events continue to attract those beginning their golfing careers. Participants from ‘Give Golf A Go’ clinics held in March have bolstered the ranks of the regular Tuesday fields. Clinics run by golf professional. Anthony Warburton, held on the alternate Tuesday continue to be popular whilst a recent get together saw many showing off their progress. The next new golfers day is scheduled for Tuesday 5 July.

Donohue Day’

This popular Social Club event was disrupted by the recent shed fire and has been rescheduled for this Sunday, 26 June. Members are requested to place their names on the entry sheet to help support the day.

June Invitational Weekend

This year’s June Tournament stroke event held on Saturday 11 June included the inaugural Club Teams Challenge. Although conditions were not ideal 116 players competed in the stroke event with Axedale Golf Club member Jamie Ward winning the A Grade section with 76 off the stick. John McIlroy was one shot of the pace with 77. Both Jamie and John play off a handicap of 6. The winning team in the Club Teams Challenge consisted of Max McLaren, Colin Gillett, Rob Levy and Greg leach representing the Bannockburn Golf Club.

The mixed pinehurst event on Sunday was played in improving conditions and together with the four ball stableford saw sixty golfers take to the links. Winning combinations were Colin and Marion Venn from Terang Golf Club in the mixed pinehurst whilst locals Terry Hadden and Geoff Leddin took out the Stableford event.

The best was saved for last with golfers enjoying perfect conditions on Monday with an individual stableford event broken into sections for veteran golfer, under 55 year male golfers and women. Two of the tournament organisers, Club Vice President, Evan McLaren, and Club Manager, Trevor Brown, enjoyed the final event by taking out their respective grades in the veteran’s section. A highlight of the day can on the eight hole for Lorraine McFarlane from Curlewis Golf Club scoring a ‘Hole in One’.

Women’s Golf

The qualifying event for the ‘Doris Chambers Foursomes’ was conducted on Thursday 9 June. Congratulations to Anne Eccles and Julie Carter who will now represent Port Fairy at later stages of this popular event.

Women’s Golf

Another successful ‘Loreal Day’ was conducted Thursday 2 June. Forty two women took to the links for this most popular event with Jane Thompson, Helen wake and gen Baulch winning their respective grades.

Club Championships

Ideal conditions greeted the finalist in the Club Championships on Sunday 29 May. After the third round played the day before many of the divisions were relatively settled.

Country member, Chris Dunn, proved too strong for the field in A Grade winning with a three over total of 291 for the 72 holes. Junior golfer, Nelson Williams, gave a strong performance to be equal runner up alongside eight time winner, Rex Grady. Nelson also took home the titles for the 54 Hole Nett and the Junior Championship. In B Grade, Mark Lewis overcame Michael Hunt by two strokes after being tied after the first three rounds. Michael reversed the result in the 54 Hole Nett by a similar margin. In C Grade Leon Cook proved too strong and recorded wins in both the Championship and 54 Hole Nett.

Fire Clean Up.

Many members were shocked to see the cleared site after the demolition crew finished their job on Friday after last week’s devastating fire. Discussions with insurance companies filled most of club manager, Mr Trevor Brown, time during the past week with the committee turning their attention to the size and placement of a new storage shed as a priority. Unfortunately replacement carts could not be accessed prior to Saturday and members will be informed when this problem is overcome.
