Fire destroys cart storage.

Early Sunday morning disaster struck in the form of a shed fire at the Port Fairy Golf Links. Fire brigades from Port Fairy, Toolong and Kirkstall attended supported by the local SES. Unfortunately nothing could be saved. The fleet of 10 rental carts were totally destroyed along with irrigation timing equipment, the BBQ catering area along with some member’s golf gear and recently donated golf sets for our junior program.  Although this equipment and the building itself was adequately insured the disruption to the club, time required for planning and rebuilding will all be significant.  Fortunately, there will be no effect on the course proper as we have sufficient time to replace the irrigation equipment before it will be required again.  Steps are in hand to replace the cart fleet to maintain the income and supply our members with this service.  We are all thankful that the storage facility was not connected to the clubhouse as the loss would have been much greater.

The Weather won!

The mid week fields were decimated by the cold weather with only the hardy determined to maintain their weekly round. Wednesday’s 25 players and Thursday’s 16 players are by far the lowest numbers recorded in many month, however once these conditions become the norm we will see everyone breaking out the winter gear and taking on the challenges that our course can throw up during winter.

Men’s Club Championships

Round one of the Club Championships was conducted in wintery conditions on Saturday 14 May. An outstanding round from 2010 Junior Club Champion, Nelson Williams, of 73 set the pace in A grade with Andrew Meade and Chris Dunn the closest challengers with 76. B Grade has started the four round competition with the tightest results with Paul Glynn (87) leading by one stroke from Paul Hickman and Simon Dowell (88); whilst in C Grade Tony Hoy (93) leads from Leon Cook (95) and Ian Abrahams (105).

Colder weather but the scores keep coming.

Golfers are experiencing colder conditions in recent days however scores returned from Saturdays monthly medal maintained the quality of play seen throughout autumn. All grade winners required sub 70 nett scores whilst an excellent 65 saw Fred Chatfield awarded the Medal for May.

Sand Fence’ maintenance.

Recent high seas placed the ‘sand fence’ adjacent to the 16th fairway under extreme pressure. It was encouraging to see the superstructure remained intact with damage confined to the shade cloth being stripped from its fasteners. A small group of volunteers reconnected the cloth during the week to restore the fences integrity.

Thursday’s Medal round, which also doubled as the second round of the ‘Mona McLeod’ Brooch and International Bowl, was played in what could only be described as perfect conditions.
