Success at ‘Grange’

The annual Social Club challenge against Grange Golf Club was conducted over the weekend of 22 and 23 October. A small but determined group ventured to Stawell to contest for the perpetual shield and were triumphant in breaking the thirty six year tradition which has always supplied a home team win. An inspiring score of 44 points returned by Leslie Hamilton, who has competed throughout the history of this event, was the anchor of the success. Leslie backed up the team success with a second placing in the mixed Pinehurst event on the Sunday.

Legacy Day

The annual Legacy Day event was held on Saturday. The event is organised by the Warrnambool Legacy Club and attracted a field of 126 players despite the ferocious weather. Neil Cahill proved the most capable golfer on the day and turned in a solid round of 37 points to win the Legacy Stableford event. Jill Rasmussen was the top women golfer with a fine round of 35 points that just beat Mary Robertson’s 34 points. The Ex-serviceman’s Cup was won by Roger Wake who played in the worst of the weather but still managed to score 33 points.

Other events

The women golfers played a Stableford event on Thursday and had a good turn up of more than 50 players. Vi Fenwick was the best of them and shot 35 points to win A grade. The women held their AGM after the round and Judy Austin was elected President for the next two years. Congratulations Judy and sincere thanks to outgoing President Kaye Patterson for her excellent contribution over the last twelve months.

On Sunday 16 dedicated men set out to complete the final round of the Club Teams Event. After earlier rounds of stroke, 4BBB stroke and Foursomes stroke the Captain’s and President’s teams were separated by only one point with the Captain’s team leading 7.5 to 6.5. Match Play decided the event outcome and on the day the President’s team triumphed 5 matches to 3 to overtake the Captain’s men and win by one match. Well played to all who braved the very difficult conditions.

Other issues

The Club’s new chipping and putting practice area is now open. There are plenty of bumps and slopes to test our short game skills and shot making imagination and the area is more than large enough to host short game competitions which should prove a lot of fun.

Cumper / Leishman Day

Sixty five veteran golfers competed in the ‘Cumper / Leishman’ day on Monday 10 October in conditions that could be described as wintery at best. This annual event attracts veteran golfers from across the district and is keenly supported by our club golfers. Terang pair of Michael Heffernan and Jim Kenna took out the quinella in the race for the ‘Lional Cumper’ Shield with Michael finishing four stableford points ahead.

The ‘Colin Leishman’ trophy for golfers over 66 years of age went to Basil Hammond of Cobden whilst the 55 to 65 age group, the ‘Robertson’ Trophy, remained with the home club through the efforts of Roger Wake.

Victorian Veteran Golfers Association Championships Traralgon

A watchful eye on the weather forecast was required by organizers of the Victorian Veteran Golfers Association State Championships as water flowed across the course on the eve of their two day event, however Port Fairy turned it on again with crisp blue skies and our sandy soils allowed the course to drain in time for the Monday tee off.

Mondays 4BBB event displayed the talents of a large contingent from Traralgon Golf Club with three pairs taking out the ‘trifector’.

Tuesdays individual Stableford event went to Brian Farley from Traralgon with a score of 42 points whilst the A grade State Champion 36 hole event was awarded to Ross McFarlane from Barwon Valley with 78,78,156. The handicap section saw Robert Grant from Devil Bend complete the two days with Nett146 to take out that section.
