PORT FAIRY GOLF CLUB NEWS from 31 May, 2012

The wind was back this week with a vengeance which made for some interesting and testing golf conditions.  We started on Wednesday with the winds making it very difficult. Paul Cross was master of the conditions for the day with a score of 35 points from Ron King who had 33 points.

Then on Thursday the ladies had to contend with the rain and the wind welcome to winter ladies. Cathy Ezzy and Chris Hayes were not perturbed though returning a great score of 44 points to edge out Beryl Duncan and Martina Whelan who managed 41 points. This was also the qualifying round for the Royal Womens Hospital event which is held in Melbourne later in the year and we will be represented by Tania Dalton and Bev Bourke. We wish them both well and will report their result in turn.

On Saturday we saw a field of 95 players battle it out for the honours. The A Grade was taken out by Colin Hurford with 38 points from John Dean with 34 points. B Grade saw Barry McCosh with 39 points the winner with John Waterson close behind on 37 points. In C Grade Sam Wilson had an excellent score of 43 points to win from Roy Harry on 37 points.  In the womens event Denise Harman was the winner on a count back from Anne Dwyer both with 29 points. The Junior winner was Matt Cameron with 32 points from Noah Best with 24 points.

Monday the veterans played a Stableford event. The A Grade winner was Bevin Williamson with 40 points from Evan McLaren with 37 points. In B Grade Tony Eccles was the winner with 36 points from Kevin Garton with 35 points.

The Port Fairy Tournament will be held on the Long Weekend in June. It is time to get your entries in now so you don’t miss out.  Entry forms can be collected from the Club or go to the club website and down load one now. There will be more than $3000 worth of prizes available to win so don’t miss out, including a large flat screen television for the first hole in one. PORT FAIRY GOLF CLUB NEWS from 24 May, 2012

Another good week for the Port Fairy Golf Club. It started with the Pro Comp where Sam Wilson was victorious with 40 points followed closely by Evan McLaren with 39 poinths. The ladies then held their Red Cross Charity Day on Thursday with a tremendous field of 112 players and raising money for a very worthy cause. Sue Holcombe, Di Robinson, Anne Hunt and Jan Irvine were the victors with a team total of 121 points from Dawn Barker, Sue Woodhouse, Carmel Darcy and Marg Finlayson with 118 points.

Then Saturday we saw some good scores as we were lucky to have a nice Autumn day. In A Grade Chris Johnston was too good with a nett 70 from James Irving with a 71 nett. Then in B Grade Bob Crispe posted a nett 71 to take the prize from Paul McNamara with 73 nett. C Grade saw David Brown with a 73 nett win on a count back from Brad Hewett also with a 73 nett.. The women’s event was taken out by Carolyn Demeye for the second week in a row with a 69 nett from Joanna Flaherty with a 70 nett. While in the Juniors Joanne Flaherty with her 70 nett won from Fraser Marris with 74 nett.

Then on Sunday the Social Club held their Donohue Day. This was won by Rhonda and Greg Santuccioni with 70 3/4 from Louise Cameron and Richard McRae with 71 7/8. While the scratch was taken out by Anne and Luke Dwyer with 79 from Beryl and John Duncan with 84. 

On Monday Port Fairy Golf Club hosted the final of the Womens Golf Western District – Eastern Division Pennant Finals. Port Fairy only had one women’s team that made the finals this year in Division 3 and they went into the match the clear underdogs. But you can’t underestimate the determination of our girls.

The Division 3 team triumphed with a 4 and a half to a half score line. The Division 3 team consisted of Helen Rix, Gail Lowen, Anne Eccles, Helen Greene, Rosalie Bunge and Barb Mahony.

PORT FAIRY GOLF CLUB NEWS from 17 May, 2012

What a week at the Port Fairy Golf Club. Pro Comp kicked it off with Ross Morey blitzing the field with 45 points from Don Pevitt with a very respectable 39 pts. The ladies then took to the course on Thursday to play the 3rd Round of the Captains trophy and Tania Dalton after recovering from her broken toe edged out Vi Fenwick on a countback to win A Grade with a square. In B Grade Karen Conlan with 3 up narrowly beat Helen Greene 2 up. And in C Grade Ros Saunders with a great 5 up was the best score of the day from Helen Dwyer.

Then Saturday saw all the big names come out to play to fine tune there games ready for the Pennant finals on Sunday.  The conditions were a true test of character the best score of the day was Troy Richardson with 71 nett and also winning A Grade from Leigh Fary. In B Grade Barry McCosh handled the conditions best to finish with a 72 nett from Gary Thomson with a 79 nett. C Grade saw John Kinnersley prevail with a 71 nett from Tiger Wettenhall with a 72 nett. The womens event was taken out by Carolyn Demeye with a 75 nett from Helen Bacon with a 77 nett. While in the Juniors Chris Roberts won on a countback from Matt Cameron with 77 nett.

Then on Sunday Port Fairy Golf Club hosted the final of the Corangamite District Pennant finals.  With 4 teams from Port Fairy making the final there was a great expectation around the clubhouse.  The result was outstanding with all 4 teams being victorious in their respective divisions.

Division 1 Scratch beat Colac 5 games to 2 games and the team consisted of Troy Richardson, Chris Dunn, Xavier McCartney, Rex Grady, Will Slocombe & Nelson Williams.

Division 3 Scratch beat East Framlingham 6 games to 1 game and the team consisted of Mark Jenkins, Aaron Finnigan, Paul Williams, Luke Dwyer, Kevin Johnson, Daryl Squires and Michael Hunt.

Division 4 Scratch beat Birregura 6.5 games to 0.5 games and the team consisted of Derek Southey, Ron Hollingsworth, Simon Dowell, Gavan Nunn, Wayne Jenkins, Glen Wilkinson and Dan Madden.

Division 3 Handicap beat Timboon 4 games to 1 game and the team consisted of Evan McLaren, Matt Cameron, Kevin Cameron, Eddie Hoy and Chris Roberts.

PORT FAIRY GOLF CLUB NEWS from 10 May, 2012

There was a tough decision to make this week whether to go to the races or play golf. The winners are so glad they decided to play golf and so glad that others made the decision to go to the races.

The Pro Comp on Wednesday was taken out by Peter Morgan with 39 points from Ross Manniche on 37 points and third was Kevin Johnson with 36 points.

The ladies played a Stableford round on Cup Day, Thursday with Carmel O’Keefe taking out A Grade with 38 points from Gail Lowen with 36. While in B Grade Dot Hughes had 35 points to win from Nicki Atkinson with 32 points.

On Saturday Port Fairy hosted teams from around the district for the Edwin Currie Cup. Many visitors came to take on the local boys on our home turf and this year saw the Currie Cup being won by a team from Terang with Port Fairy as the runners up.

The Port Fairy Golf Club had 7 teams competing in this season’s pennant competition in the Corangamite District Golf Association.

From those seven teams we have 4 teams, who have made the final which will be played at the Port Fairy Golf Club next Sunday 13th May, 2012. The course will be closed to social play on this day.
The successful finalists are:
Division 1 Scratch - Troy Richardson, Xavier McCartney, Chris Dunn, Rex Grady, Nelson Williams, Will Slocombe & Shane Gurnett.
Division 3 Scratch – Luke Dwyer, Kevin Johnson, Paul Williams, Aaron Finnigan, Mark Jenkins, Daryl Squires & Michael Hunt
Division 4 Scratch – Gavan Nunn, Dan Madden, Simon Dowell, Derek Southey, Wayne Jenkins, Glen Wilkinson & Ron Hollingsworth
Division 3 Handicap – Evan McLaren, Matt Cameron, Chris Roberts, Kevin Cameron & Eddie Hoy
The other teams competed well but unfortunately just missed out on the finals this year.
This is a good opportunity to come and watch some of our fellow members vie for the prize of being the best in the district and we with them all Good luck.

PORT FAIRY GOLF CLUB NEWS from 3 May, 2012

The golfing weather gods finally let us down this week with the weather turning quite quickly to poor. Although the temperature is getting cooler the golf keeps getting hotter with the good scores continuing to flow. Wednesday saw 94 players battle the conditions with Darren Stenhouse coming out the victor with a great score of 5 up followed closely behind by John O’Sullivan with 3 up.

Thursday conditions started to improve for the ladies and this was reflected in the winning score of the winner Jan Willey with a sensational 65 nett to take out the monthly medal. Jan also won B Grade from Gail Lowen with 70 nett. A Grade was won by Jill Millard with a 71 nett from Di Gordon with 73. C Grade was won by Gen Baulch with a 71 nett from Christine Hayes with 73 nett.

On Saturday we had a 4BBB team event which was closely contested with Gary Thomson and Corey Grapentin winning the day with 45 points followed closely by George Noonan and John Lane with 44 points and coming in third was Rod Dunstone and John Dean with 43 points.

Junior golfers are reminded that a one hour long junior clinic is held every Saturday at 3.00 pm. A great way to improve your game and have fun at the same time.
