PORT FAIRY GOLF NEWS FROM 25 OCTOBER 2012

On Sunday the social club welcomed 13 visitors from Grange golf club for the Annual Shield. In windy conditions the Port Fairy club defeated Grange by an average score of 25.2 points to 20.4 points. Grange golf club is not usually subjected to 40 knot winds, which was perhaps reflected in their scores. A barbecue tea was provided, and great day of golf and social activity was had by all.

On Monday the Veterans held their Annual General meeting. Evan McLaren was re-elected President, Les Christie re-elected Secretary / Treasurer, Hank Moritz re-elected events co-ordinator, and Bob Dwyer assistant co-ordinator. The Jim Fitzwilliam trophy was awarded to Bob Dwyer, while runner up went to Hank Moritz. 

Last Thursday the Ladies held their Guest Day, with invited guests coming from Warrnambool, Cobden, East Framlingham, and Heywood clubs. With the course in perfect condition, the ladies competed in Chapmans Foursomes with pleasant weather and little wind. The winners were Ruth Walters and Alison Sinclair, and the runners up were the sister combination of Jean Wilson and Beryl Drake.

This coming Sunday the Juniors will hold their presentation day. A 2 person stroke Ambrose nine hole event will be followed by an afternoon tea and presentations.

This Sunday the final of the monthly medallists will also be held. A monthly medal is awarded from November to October (current year). The monthly medallist is generally determined on the first Saturday of each month in a stroke event, with the best net score assessed as the winner per month. The players that win the monthly events then meet in a play-off event to determine the Medal Champion. This day will combine with the Junior Presentation day.

Presentation Night is Friday November 9th, and the Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 15th November at 8.00 pm.

 

PORT FAIRY GOLF NEWS FROM 18 OCTOBER 2012

The Cumper / Leishman day was held on October 15th at the Port Fairy Golf Club for the 13th year and is open to all male golfers 55 years and over. Windy conditions prevailed, but it was dry. The 3 main events were the Cumper shield, open to all players, the Leishman trophy, 66 years and over players and the Colin Robertson prize, 55 – 66 years players. The Cumper shield was won by Port Fairy player Bob Dwyer, with a fine score of 43 points. The Colin Leishman trophy was taken out by John O’Sullivan, also from Port Fairy with a score of 39 on a count back. The Colin Robertson prize was won by Warrnambool golfer Philip Laird with 40 points on a count back. Players from across the district, 86 in total, had a great day of golf. The final of Club Teams Championships was held on Sunday in which the President’s team of N Willliams, A Dwyer, E McLaren, D. Southey, B. Waixel, R Wake & C Roberts defeated the Captain’s team of A. Finnigan, M McLaren, P. Williams, L. Priest, B. Rix, R. Hollingsworth, S. Malone & T. Ryan. Three rounds had been completed before the final on Sunday with the President’s team leading 8 ½ matches to 5 ½. The final round was decided with 8 single handicap match play in handicap order, with the final result after four rounds 13 matches to 9. This was the fourth year the President’s team has won the Club Teams Championship shield.

On Thursday the ladies competed in the Rosemary Jewell Shield, which is held on memory of Rosemary who passed away on the golf course 19 years ago. The day was attended Tim Jewell and Jenny Gleeson, Rosemary’s children, with Tim presenting the Shield to the winner Peg Nitschke. We thank the family for donating the trophies on the day. This was followed by the Ladies Annual General Meeting, with Judy Austin re-elected as President, Vice President – Kathy Miller, Captain – Helen Rix, Vice Captain – Julie Carter, Secretary / Treasurer – Rosalie Bunge and Handicap – Ros Bromell.

Legacy Day was held on Saturday, with the proceeds of the day going to the RSL club. The day was very well supported with 151 players competing. We thank the members of the RSL club for providing a barbecue with the meat kindly supplied by Hopkins River Beef, and the great table of trophies that were provided.

PORT FAIRY GOLF NEWS FROM 11 OCTOBER 2012

In blustery conditions on Thursday, the ladies took to the course with a strong northerly wind, which soon swung around to a much cooler southerly. Jill Millard won the A grade over Helen Wake, with Julie Carter and Geraldine Dalton winning the B and C grades respectively.

Rod Maher was the men’s monthly medal winner on Saturday shooting a nett 68 to beat Mark Jenkins. Matt Cameron won B Grade, and Fraser Marris was the C Grade winner. Lynn Bryden was the women’s winner, and the Junior section was won by Jo Flaherty. On Wednesday Stephen Malone posted 41 points to defeat Colin Hurford on 39 points.

The walls for the new shed are currently being erected, so it is hopeful that the shed will be completed in the next few weeks.

PORT FAIRY GOLF NEWS FROM 4 OCTOBER 2012

The Alec Calvert Junior Open was held on Sunday September 30 with 24 young players taking to the course in very good conditions. The entries were made up of mixed talent, with each player allocated a position in the field to match their expertise. The Open Girls event was won by Joanna Flaherty (17 years) for the fourth time in as many years. With her talent growing each year, her score of 76 gross is the best ever, off a handicap of 5. The Boys Open was won by Matt Ryan (15 years), 7 handicap with a score of 77 gross. This is Matt’s first win in the Open event, but be sure, he will be back to defend his title.

Last Tuesday the Ladies Foursomes knockout was held with the winners being Geraldine Dalton and Mary Anscombe 1 up over Beryl Duncan and Helen Greene. It was a steady contest all the way down, and it was taken right to the 18th hole. It was great to see the support given to the competitors from other members.

Thursday was the “Star of the West” Monthly Medal which saw 42 women taking to the course. Best gross was Anne Dwyer, monthly medal winner was Helen Rix, with the putting going to Judith Austin.

On Friday, 29 ladies competed in the 30 – 45 Markers Day Stableford Event, with the winner being S Kelson from Warrnambool in the 30 – 39 section over M Hoy on a count back from F Crooks. In the 40 – 45 section, M Joyce from Willaura won over L Coxon from Terang.

Saturday competition, Grand Final Day and only 44 players braved the cold, windy and wet conditions to take to the course in the Foursomes Stroke event.
